Norfolk wildlife faces challenges as drought continues to impact nature reserves
The ongoing drought poses threats to local habitats and wildlife in Norfolk
Norfolk Wildlife Trust is facing significant challenges as the ongoing drought and water shortages continue to affect nature reserves across the region.
Helen Baczkowska, the Trust’s research and evidence manager, shared her concerns about the severe impact of extreme heat on local wildlife and habitats.
Helen explained that ponds and wetland nature reserves are drying up, leading to harsh conditions for plants and animals.
"We are seeing effects quite quickly and I've seen a lot of dried up ponds this year and that will have impact for frogs and newts and snakes and birds that go there to drink" Helen said.
The drought has also made it challenging for wildlife to find essential resources like food and water.
Helen urges the public to do what they can to help local ecosystems:
"We all need to work together. If youve got a garden, make sure we've got lovely sheltered places where wildlife can get into the shade,
even if you haven't got a garden pond, just a little dish with water that you keep topped up with some pebbles in it."
Experts at the trust highlighted the broader implications of climate change, with more frequent heatwaves and dry spells leading to increased concern about the future.
To tackle these challenges, Helen stressed the importance of working with nature to mitigate the effects of climate change:
"Nature is part of the solution to this."
Creating new wetlands will be a huge part of this. Along with maintaining rivers and woodlands, and planting more trees could help reduce flooding risks and maintain vital habitats.
Despite the challenges, Norfolk Wildlife Trust remains hopeful that individuals can take action to combat the effects of climate change, advocating for turning despair into action.
