A man from Norfolk will spend the next 13 months in prison for killing a young Cambridgeshire mum.

Kevin Miller of King’s Lynn admitted to causing the death of Rebecca Ableman by careless driving in September 2022.

The 30 year was walking with her two year-old in Willingham on the B1050- when she was struck over the head by a loose piece of crane equipment.

This was hanging over the side of a lorry trailer being driven by Miller, who told Peterborough Crown Court he transporting scrap metal from King's Lynn docks to depots in Essex and Cambridgeshire at the time.

The 30 year-old mum died in hospital several weeks later.

"She was the most amazing, strong, and loving mummy"

Her family have previously released the following tribute to her:

“Becky was the light within our family. A beautiful partner, an aspiring sister and a precious daughter. The friend that brought everyone together and the colleague who helped so many who needed her. She was the most loving, caring and supportive partner you could ever wish for, she was always the light at the darkest of times.

“But most of all, she was the most amazing, strong, and loving mummy to her two-year-old daughter. Becky’s independence, kindness, determination and beauty will live on through her forever. She will always be her daughter’s superhero. We cherish every moment and memory we had together.”

“This tragedy could have so easily been avoided but it wasn’t through the failure of this defendant to take the most basic and elementary of steps.”

He said Miller “assumed the crane hydraulics would be sufficient to prevent movement as it pinched the load”.

The judge said the defendant “assumed the load itself wouldn’t shift in transit” but the grabber unit moved to protrude over the nearside edge of the trailer.

“This first happened a relatively short distance and time before the grabber collided with Rebecca,” he said.

He said Ms Ableman was on the pavement pushing her daughter in a pram.

“There’s no suggestion Mr Miller knew of the collision until significantly later,” he said.

“He did become aware shortly later that the grabber had moved.

“He pulled over to use the controls for the grabber unit to put it back in place.”
