Norfolk driving school promotes inclusivity with neurodivergent training
Aspiring to lead the way in inclusive driving lessons, says owner
A driving school in Norfolk believes it has become the first driving school in the county where all instructors are trained to teach neurodivergent learners.
The initiative was inspired by the experiences of Kylie Oliver, the owner of KSM Driving Tuition, with her son who has ADHD.
Kylie realised there was a lack of support for those with additional needs during driving lessons. So, she he decided to ensure her entire team received specialist training to assist learners with tailored approaches.
"My son doesn't always get listened to at school. The teachers don't always adapt to what he needs. They want him to fit in with society. But that's not the case in the car,
They need a different approach. They need someone to understand them, to help them achieve what we know they can all achieve," kyle said.
She stressed the importance of adapting lessons to cater to different learning styles, particularly for those with ADHD, who may benefit from breaking down information into more manageable portions.
"I wanted to make sure that we were all inclusive and that we can all help people with additional needs, everyone has a right to learn to drive."
Kylie wants to ensure that people with different learning needs have equal opportunities to gain essential driving skills, fostering a more inclusive environment within the learning space.
Since announcing the initiative, Kylie says they've had a great response:
"We've had a fantastic response to it, the phone hasn't stopped ringing. people realise that there are drivers out there specifically trained,
Every driving instructor has been trained to teach people to drive, but not every driving instructor is trained to teach people with neurodiversity to drive. And there is a difference."
Kylie hopes to see more instructors become neurodiversity trained.
