Norfolk charity appeals for funds through tooth fairy memories
Fundraiser aims to cover costs of dental treatments for cats in care
Cats Protection West Norfolk Cat Centre is appealing to the public to donate to their 'tooth fairy' fundraiser to help cover dental treatment costs for cats in their care.
The fundraiser is inspired by childhood memories of the tooth fairy, who traditionally leaves a coin under a child's pillow for a lost tooth.
Stacey Ely, Deputy Manager at the West Norfolk Cat Centre, highlighted the financial strain experienced due to the numerous dental procedures required for cats coming into the centre.
"In the first six months of 2026, we had to carry out a staggering 33 dental procedures on cats that have come into our care, so you can see how big an impact this has on our budget," Ely said.
"We’ve seen cats with fractured canine teeth, dental infections, lesions and massive tartar build up who all needed dental x-rays and extractions, followed by a scale and polish," Ely added.
"Many of the cats who come to us have been living with this discomfort for a long time as they are masters of hiding pain and will carry out their usual lives, eating and drinking, even though they become more difficult," Ely explained.
Anna Page, Cats Protection Community Fundraising Officer, described the collaboration with local veterinary dentists.
"We're lucky to work with some wonderful local veterinary dentists who work their magic to give cats a pain-free life. But dental work isn’t cheap and the costs stack up quite quickly," Page said.
"Recently we had a cat with a fractured canine tooth and that cost us over £550 for dental x-rays, removal and a full scale and polish. Another cat required two dental surgeries to remove all their teeth, and that was more than £1,000," Page added.
"The average cost for dental work is £650, so if we can raise just £650 through the tooth fairy appeal it will provide another cat with the dental treatment they need to be pain-free," Page stated.
The appeal is seeking donations starting from 8th August, and contributions can be made through the centre's website.
