Norfolk Fire and Rescue urges caution as BBQ fires spike due to dry weather
Safety tips issued amid recent surge in outdoor fires
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service is advising caution to those planning barbecues as the county endures a period of extended dry weather.
In the past week alone, the service responded to 54 fires occurring on grassland, fields, and woodland areas in the region.
Mark Duff-Dick, Prevention Delivery Manager for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, highlighted the increased risk of fires due to dry vegetation, noting that some of these incidents could have been avoided.
"The sustained dry and warm weather has dried out vegetation, raising the risk of fires in open spaces, potentially leading to wildfires," Mark Duff-Dick said.
A significant number of these fires were linked to the use of barbecues, particularly disposable types.
"We want people to enjoy the countryside, but we would say please refrain from using disposable barbecues, even in the countryside, in wooded areas, or along the coastline,
A picnic maybe would be a safer option," Mark said.
These fires occurred not only in open community spaces but also within private gardens.
For those who intend to have a barbecue, Norfolk Fire and Rescue recommend ensuring barbecues are placed on firm, level ground and away from flammable materials or vegetation.
Mark also highlighted the importance of ensuring your barbecue is never left unsupervised.
Additionally, they advise against using petrol, paraffin, or other flammable liquids to light grills.
"We expect and we are prepared that there may be more fires over the next couple of weeks, which we're ready to respond to. But, as a preventative measure, please, take some of the advice that we give" Mark said.
The service are also urging people to dispose of cigarettes and rubbish responsibly and avoid lighting out door fires .
