Titchwell Manor, on the North Norfolk coast, are encouraging their guests to leave their phones behind and explore the local area using hand drawn maps instead.

Digital detox researchers from the University of East Anglia partnered with Titchwell Manor to help design the maps. Following research into the benefits of switching of from phones and social media whilst traveling.

The illustrated routes are designed to guide visitors around local 'beaty spots', promoting Norfolk's scenic landscape. These spots include, Titchwell Marsh Nature Reserve, Brancaster Beach and the Norfolk Coastal Path.

Professor Brad Mckenna, from the University of East Anglia, said being away from technology helps people " be more attentive and focused on their surroundings."

"We're using technology every day. It's integrated into our work, it's integrated into our social life, but that means it's difficult to disconnect from work and keep that separate to our social lives.

"It can lead to like anxiety and wellbeing problems and people having difficulty to relax" he said.

University of Greenwich Researcher, Dr Wenjie Cai, said the benefits are beyond just turning off your phone:

"It really enrichs this kind of playfulness: where we are and which direction we should go for. Aswell as a sense of orientation and understanding where north is."

He also believes it will boost local tourism:

"It creates opportunity for visitors to engage with local shops, churches, resteraunts and cafes. They might not be very popular on instagram or social media, but something that locals are very proud off."

The hotel is also offering the guests the option of locking their phones away and switching off TVs in bedrooms during their stay.

This is being launched during National Walking Month.
