A local charity tells us more resources need to go towards preventing homelessness and building more affordable homes

Data from Shelter shows that over a thousand people are homeless or in temporary accommodation in Norfolk.

These figures also show that 80 people are typically sleeping on the streets in Norfolk on a given night.

"That's not affordable for many of the people that we support"

Dr Jan Sheldon is from St Martins, based near Norwich:

"So we tread a very careful balance between trying to make sure that people are supported during the festive period, and not reminded or traumatised of times past.

"But also providing some kind of hope, as well. So that means small gifts and thinking about what we're doing on the day and during the run up to it.

"Social housing is around and about 50% of market rent, while affordable is about 80% and to be honest that's not affordable for many of the people that we support.

"So, the only way we're going to end the housing crisis is if we are building 90 thousand new social homes, every year, for the next ten years".

Ministers say they're putting £3.5 billion towards ending homelessness and rough sleeping over the next three years.
