A 40-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a neighbour who was found with serious burns in a coastal village.

Christopher Brooks, of Walcott, Norfolk, appeared before Norwich Magistrates' Court on Tuesday charged with the murder of Robert Button.

Norfolk Police said emergency services were called to Coastline Village off Ostend Road in Walcott at around 5pm on Sunday following reports of a dispute.

The force said a man aged in his 70s was found with serious burns and was taken to hospital in Norwich where he died in the early hours of Monday.

Police said officers, together with fire and ambulance crews, attended the scene in Walcott and a man was found with "serious burns following a fire which is believed to have been started deliberately in the doorway of a property".

Detective Chief Inspector Kev Barber, from the Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team, said in an earlier statement that the "victim and suspect were known to one another and were neighbours".

Brooks, who had a shaved head and wore a black jumper with the sleeves rolled up above the elbows, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address in court.

He is charged with the murder of Mr Button and with "an associated allegation of damaging a Nissan Navara belonging to Robert Button".

Brooks, of Coastline Village, was not asked to enter pleas to the two charges.

He was remanded in custody to appear before Norwich Crown Court on Wednesday.
