Levels of youth homelessness are 'criminal', says Norfolk charity
The East saw a thirteen per cent drop in young people facing homelessness, last year. The second highest of anywhere in the UK
A local charity tells us it's 'criminal' that over 10 thousand young people in the East faced homelessness, last year.
It comes as the region was one of only two to see a drop in these numbers over this time- according to new research.
Centrepoint has found 123,934 young people faced homelessness across the U.K. in 2024/25.
However, the region saw a 13% drop when comparing figures between 2023/4 and 2024/5.
10,520 presented as homelessness or were at risk of it, over the last year.
"This shouldn't be happening in the first place at all"
Dr Jan Sheldon is from St Martins based in Norwich:
"This really is incredibly concerning because we have a whole catchment of young people now who are going to really struggle to make a mark in the world, live independently and to make a useful contribution to society.
"We need more prevention work as this shouldn't be happening in the first place at all. We need more joined up thinking and support for young people.
"On top of this we need more social housing and making accessing support simple for everybody- but our young people in particular".
What's the Government said on this?
Ministers say they're planning to halve rough-sleeping- through £3.5 billion of investment.
