'It's too late for us'- residents living on Hemsby's seafront
10 metres was lost in a storm surge at the start of the year and there's a risk that Storm Goretti could cause further damage
Some remaining seafront residents in Hemsby tell us they're worried it's 'too late' for their homes to be saved.
14 home owners on the Marrams and Fakes Road have been told to leave- after recent coastal erosion's made them unsafe.
Ten metres of land was lost in a storm surge at the start of the year and there's a risk that Storm Goretti could cause further damage to the soft sandy dunes.
"It's just gone too far now"
Susan's lived on Fakes Road for 14 years:
"Over the last 13 or 14 years it just seems like the whole situation has just got worse and worse with erosion.
"We brought this place as our retirement home. But, we just don't know what's next now.
"We've got nowhere to go, we can't afford anywhere and we're just waiting to see what the Council say".
Cliff Williams has also been living on the road for 25 years:
"When the erosion hit the row of houses in front of us, I thought I'll be well gone before it gets to us.
"But, I'm afraid it's not gone that way and I've outlived it. I can't see anybody being able to do anything now, it's just gone too far".
"Coastal experts say there is a real risk of collapse"
A council spokesperson said: ‘’We have been liaising closely with people affected by erosion in Hemsby for some time, but the recent spate of storms and forecast of further damage from Storm Goretti means some properties are now in an even more precarious position.
‘’It is extremely traumatic for those affected, but coastal experts say there is a real risk of collapse.
"Making sure residents and the public are safe is of paramount importance so we are working closely with owners to explain the risks, offer support and advice where necessary and detail the options available to people at this very difficult time.’’
