East Midlands Railway doubles body-worn cameras to protect staff and passengers
Initiative aims to reduce abuse and improve safety on railway

East Midlands Railway (EMR), operated by Transport UK, has enhanced its safety measures by rolling out over 330 additional body-worn cameras for staff.
This initiative is part of the "THINK" campaign, focusing on reducing abuse toward staff and customers on the railway.
The new cameras serve as both a deterrent and an evidence-capturing tool, helping protect station and on-train colleagues and passengers.
Staff will activate the cameras during ticket checks, at busy stations, during events, or if situations escalate.
Captured footage is stored securely for 31 days and can be retained longer and shared with the British Transport Police (BTP) if needed for investigations.
Research indicates wearing body-worn cameras reduces assault likelihood by 47%, even when not recording.
Since April 2025, BTP has recorded 60 physical assaults and 136 verbal assaults against EMR staff amidst 21.8 million customer journeys.
EMR collaborates with the BTP and trade union representatives to ensure the rollout effectively enhances staff and customer safety.
Philippa Cresswell, Customer Experience Director, emphasized the benefits:
“Increasing the number of body-worn cameras is just one more way we are making our railway a safer place for everyone. Other measures include more specialist training, increased staff presence in key locations, new technology, and closer working with stakeholders."
The initiative reinforces that there is no excuse for abuse on the railway, aiming for safer travel experiences for all.
