Norwich South MP Clive Lewis has written to the Health Secretary, calling for a review of miscarriage care practices across England.

He says the existing approach needs to change, where some families often experience multiple miscarriages before receiving support and treatment.

Clive says "At the moment, what we have is a situation where for most women, it takes 3 very painful, very distressing and traumatic miscarriages before the appropriate NHS support kicks in for them with specialist care and attention."

The MPs focus is on adopting 'Tommy’s Graded Model of Miscarriage Care', which suggests a more personalised method of support for families.

Lewis said, "Families shouldn't have to endure repeated loss before accessing care, tests and treatments that could prevent another miscarriage."

According to Tommy's, their model offers structured support to reduce repeated miscarriages, based on findings from a pilot study.

This study suggested that 95% of participants felt they received improved care.

Clive said: "I feel passionately about this because these are my fellow human beings. They're my constituents. I've got a wife, I've got a daughter. I understand, you know, what it can be like through friends and friends of my family who have had miscarriages. It's A deeply traumatic experience."

Clive said its about more than just the care, but also about mental health:

"This isn't just about the care that women should get, but also for mental health to give them more confidence going forward and having more pregnancies. It also saves lives."

According to the 'pilot scheme' of the proposed model, "it could potentially prevent almost 11000 miscarriages across the UK each year" said Clive.

The department of Health and Social Care has been contacted for a response.
