Aurora, the three-year-old snow leopard at Banham Zoo, is recovering well after undergoing successful cataract surgery in November.

The operation, performed by a specialist ophthalmic surgeon, has restored clearer vision to her right eye, allowing Aurora to regain confidence in her surroundings.

The procedure was carried out when the zoo’s veterinary team diagnosed Aurora with a mature cataract, a condition believed to have been present since birth.

While she had adapted to the condition, it had gradually reduced her vision over time.

Her surgery marks a significant milestone for both Aurora’s health and her role as an ambassador for the conservation of her vulnerable species.

A dedicated effort

Zoo staff and veterinarians came together to ensure the surgery and recovery process went smoothly. Deborah Harris, Animal Manager at Banham Zoo, said:

“It’s great to see that Aurora is recovering well from her surgery.

Procedures on big cats are always a little nerve wracking, especially a long procedure, but thanks to the dedicated care of the keepers and veterinarians the whole day went smoothly.

Aurora is accepting her eye drops for some tasty treats from her keepers and is recovering well."

Since the operation, Aurora has been given additional enrichment and careful monitoring as she continues to heal. Although she may initially appear to be taking things slower, her playful nature and lively personality remain fully intact, delighting staff and visitors alike.

A vital role in conservation

Snow leopards are listed as Vulnerable, with wild populations continuing to decline.

The care provided to individual animals in zoos, including interventions like Aurora’s surgery, plays a key role in the global conservation of the species.

Her ongoing wellbeing ensures that she can remain a strong ambassador for snow leopards, raising awareness of their plight and the importance of conservation efforts.

Support Aurora’s journey

Banham Zoo is offering visitors a chance to support Aurora by making a £10 donation toward her operation and conservation costs.

As a thank-you, donors will receive a limited-edition print of Aurora’s paw print.

Banham Zoo will continue to share updates on Aurora’s recovery. Visitors can look forward to seeing her thriving in her habitat with her improved vision over the festive period.
