During the closing stages of a challenging night shift, Wigan response officer PC Thomas Fairbrother-Wilcock exhibited exceptional bravery by confronting an armed man involved in a violent stabbing incident in the town centre.

PC Fairbrother-Wilcock arrived on the scene alone, where he faced chaos as 30 terrified members of the public ran towards him, many injured and covered in blood. Despite the immediate threat from the armed suspect, he acted decisively to locate and apprehend the attacker, preventing additional harm.

As reports indicated multiple victims subjected to vicious attacks, PC Fairbrother-Wilcock relied on his training and communication skills, demonstrating outstanding personal bravery in a fast-moving situation.

His intervention included support from PC Lisa Naylor, who courageously left her hospital watch duties to assist. Together, they protected public safety and ensured no further casualties.

The offender, Charles McMurray from Satchel Close, Wigan, admitted to multiple counts of Section 18 wounding with intent, threatening with a bladed article, and threats to kill. He received a nine years and nine months prison sentence.

PC Fairbrother-Wilcock was awarded the Bravery Award at the Wigan District Awards in recognition of his courage and selfless actions during the dangerous incident. Speaking on receiving the award, he acknowledged the challenges faced by response officers:

“I was really happy to be recognised. It means a lot to know you’ve done a good job and that it’s been seen by supervisors and colleagues... Looking back, the incident was terrifying. In that moment, though, there was no time to focus on the fear, I just had to focus and do my job to protect people.”
