Traffic expected to spike across Greater Manchester as drivers return from Christmas breaks
Roads could be busier than usual as holidaymakers head home
Drivers across Greater Manchester should prepare for heavy traffic today as roads are expected to be some of the busiest of the New Year.
Many holidaymakers are heading home after their Christmas breaks, causing increased congestion across the region.
Major roadworks are also set to resume after a pause during the holiday season, further adding to potential disruption.
Advice for drivers
John Campbell from National Highways has urged motorists to take key steps to ensure their journey is trouble-free, emphasising the importance of getting your vehicle winter-ready before setting off:
“Get your fuel to make sure you’ve got plenty for your journey. Your battery if you’ve got an electric vehicle – we’ve got a lot of those vehicles on the roads nowadays. Check your oil, check your screen wash, and more importantly, check your tyres as well, because we do get a lot of vehicles that get a flat tyre on the road nowadays.”
Campbell also recommends being prepared for unexpected issues along the way:
“If anything does untoward happen, it’s good to take some blankets, food and water, just in case you do break down. Also, if you can, make sure your mobile phone battery is charged as well so you can keep in touch with loved ones, or get in touch with recovery, or ourselves at National Highways.”
