Motorways at standstill following major crash on Simister Island
The interchange was shut on Sunday night (16 November)
Drivers are facing traffic chaos on Greater Manchester's motorways this morning following a crash at Simister Island.
The interchange, which connects the M66 with the M60, is fully closed.
Emergency services were called to a crash at around 21:44GMT on Sunday night (16 November).
National Highways said: "M66 southbound has reopened between J3 and M60/M62.
"Police investigations continue at scene and are expected to last through the morning.
"The M66 is now closed both ways within the M60/M62 junction and all access to #Simister Island remains closed."
Pictures show huge queues building on the M60, while the M62 is also expected to be busier eastbound because of diversions in place.
Simister Island is expected to remain closed for some time.
