Seven people have been taken into custody following an investigation into an alleged nationwide plan to disrupt retail businesses through theft and damage.

Authorities believe the group had been gathering in Salford, where they were reportedly undergoing training focused on non-violent direct action.

Investigators suspect this was part of a broader effort to carry out organised shoplifting raids on high-value retailers and major supermarket chains, with the intention of redistributing the stolen goods.

In a joint operation involving officers working alongside the Metropolitan Police, one man and six women were arrested in Salford today (19 April).

All seven suspects have been detained on suspicion of conspiracy to steal and remain in custody as inquiries continue.

Assistant Chief Constable Steph Parker said: “This joint operation with the Metropolitan Police has resulted in the arrests of seven individuals who we believe were planning to take part in coordinated national activity targeting high‑value retail stores.

“We are taking robust action to disrupt this type of organised criminality, and it will not be tolerated in Greater Manchester.

“We take a strong stance against targeted criminality such as this and I would like to thank our Metropolitan Police colleagues for their assistance.”
