A man has been sentenced to 16 years for manslaughter after a 38-year-old was stabbed to death at a New Year’s Day party in Rochdale.

Today (14th November 2025), Hassan Suliman, 31, of Rothesay Terrace in Rochdale, appeared at Manchester Crown Court. He has been ordered to serve a minimum of 13 years behind bars, followed by three years on licence.

Emergency services found Alberto Ursu with multiple stab wounds in the early hours of 1st January following reports of a disturbance at a house party on Essex Street, Rochdale. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at hospital.

Investigators discovered that Suliman had been involved in a confrontation with Mr Ursu during the party, leaving both injured.

Suliman fled the scene but was located a short time later collapsed nearby. Forensic analysis revealed links between the weapons and both Suliman and Mr Ursu.

During a six-week trial in September, Suliman was found guilty of manslaughter but acquitted of other charges.

Detective Sergeant Helen Hitchen from Greater Manchester Police’s Major Incident Team said:

“This was meant to be a happy night celebrating the New Year but sadly ended in the tragic loss of a life.

“This case just goes to show the devastating consequences of knife crime and its lasting impacts on lives.

"Suliman is now serving time behind bars for his actions that night, and I do hope that this sentence brings some measure of closure to Alberto’s family."

Suliman’s sentencing highlights the consequences of knife crime and its effects on individuals and their families.
