Police issue statement as demonstrators clash outside 'migrant hotel' in Fallowfield
Two groups of protesters met outside the hotel on Sunday afternoon (31 August)
Police have issued a statement after two groups of demonstrators met outside a hotel in Fallowfield understand to be housing asylum seekers.
Officers were seen stood between sets of pro and anti-immigrant protesters on Wilmslow Road on Sunday (31 August).
Greater Manchester Police have confirmed no arrests were made, with a heavy police presence in the area.
A spokesperson for the force said: "We respect and facilitate the right to lawful protest.
"As ever, appropriate plans have been put in place with the organisers and local partners to minimise disruption for those who live and work in the area."
It comes as the Home Secretary prepares to unveil new rules for the asylum system and border security.
Yvette Cooper will say the Government's overhaul of the "broken" asylum system will contribute to ending the use of asylum hotels, an issue which has led to widespread protests over the summer.
The Home Secretary will set out planned changes to the refugee family reunion process to give "greater fairness and balance".
And she will claim that the Government's promise to "smash the gangs" behind English Channel crossings are showing results in stopping people arriving in the first place.
