There's just one day to go until Oasis return to their home town, Manchester, for their sold out gigs.

The wait is almost over for the 80,000 lucky fans who managed to get their hands on tickets for tomorrow.

The last time Oasis played Heaton Park was in June 2009, over 16 years ago.

Musician and Journalist John Robb knew them way before then: "I met Noel first, and this is back in the late 80s', but he wasn't in Oasis then, he was just a kid going to gigs around Manchester.

"To this day he talks about the Manchester 50, the 50 people who went to every gig around town.

"He'd just talk about music, he was just another person at a gig.

"They definitely had songs, good songs.

"They worked hard, they'd rehearse in The Boardwalk five times a week.

"You'd go in and they'd be rehearsing one rift over and over again.

"They weren't chancers, they worked hard to make this thing perfect.

"They knew they were good."

John said he was intrigued by their style: "I thought 'oh that's interesting, they're somewhere between Nirvana and the Stone Roses' there's a massive space for something like that.

"But it took the brilliance of Alan McGee... he saw them at the gig in Glastonbury when they just turned up to play, without telling anybody.

"Just as the doors opened, they were playing and he (Alan McGee) goes 'this is the greatest band I've ever seen and I'm signing them'."

John said Noel asked him whether it was the right move just a couple of days later: "Walking down Whitworth Street in Manchester and he said 'what do you reckon, Alan McGee wants to sign me.'

"And I go 'oh my gosh, that is so perfect, you could not be on a better label' because McGee always wanted a 60s psychedelic band with a punk rock edge and there it was right in front of him.

"When he told me, I thought wow, that is absolutely perfect, because it was just the right label and also he's (Alan McGee) not going to ruin them, he's not going to spoil them, he's not going to tell them what to do, he's just going to let them be which is a skill."
