New data released by the Mental Health Foundation for Mental Health Awareness Week highlights the reliance on unhealthy coping mechanisms by North West residents when managing stress, anxiety, and low mood.

The poll, conducted with over 4,000 UK adults, shows that 60% of participants from the North West have used harmful actions over the last month to cope with poor mental health. Notably, 25% reported increased social media use and 24% self-isolation, despite evidence suggesting these actions may exacerbate mental health issues.

Findings and concerns

Other prevalent harmful actions included oversleeping, commonly termed “bed rotting,” with 23% of participants engaging in this behavior, and comfort eating at 22%.

Mark Rowland, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation, expressed concern over the widespread use of harmful coping methods despite growing awareness:

“Despite the progress in increasing awareness around mental health, too many people in the North West have yet to translate awareness into effective action,” Rowland said.

Positive actions and the path forward

While harmful behaviors are rampant, the survey also found 74% of individuals in the North West have taken positive actions such as spending time outdoors (31%), engaging in enjoyable activities (31%), and physical activity (29%).

Rowland emphasized the need to focus on actions that improve mental health:

“Connecting with nature, spending time with others, doing things we love, and getting moving are all great ways to keep our mood positive…Encouraging people to drop the negative coping mechanisms is vital.”

Call for broader action

Rowland calls for action at individual and political levels, urging government intervention to address the mental health crisis and create supportive conditions for mental well-being, during times of uncertainty, financial strain, and isolation.

The statistics reveal the critical need for increased awareness and effective strategies to foster healthier coping methods and protect community mental health.
