New frontline officers to be deployed across Greater Manchester
Greater Manchester Police have welcomed the Government’s pledge for stronger and safer streets through the Neighbourhood Policing guarantee
Greater Manchester Police have welcomed the Government’s pledge for stronger and safer streets in Greater Manchester through the Neighbourhood Policing guarantee.
The announcement today (10 April) includes a Home Office commitment to fund 13,000 new frontline officers by 2029.
In 2023, GMP guaranteed that every district ward has a named local police officer which can be found and contacted via their website, and that they will tell communities the work they are doing through their community engagement service Bee In The Loop.
Since 2021, GMP say they have reduced burglary by a third, vehicle crime by a quarter, and are bringing to justice 100 shoplifters a week.
Every area of GM has neighbourhood tasking teams to proactively tackle crime, neighbourhood crime teams to bring offenders to justice, neighbourhood policing teams to patrol our streets and ensure community safety, and a prevention hub to solve problems and reduce crime.
Assistant Chief Constable Matthew Boyle, GMP’s lead for local policing, said: “Our problem-solving approach to neighbourhood policing is seeing us properly tackle the issues that matter most to the public, with a focus on working with local communities and partners to keep our streets safe.
“Ensuring our local policing teams are dedicated to making our public spaces be safe and feel safe for those who live, work, and visit our city-region is a top priority.
“In Greater Manchester, we are proactively fighting crime and bringing more offenders to justice. Operation Vulcan has seen us work relentlessly with partners to address long-standing issues and make streets safer, while our monthly Operation Avro has combined daily local crime-fighting with the support of specialist resources to tackle suspects and engage with the public.
“The Government’s announcement today only strengthens the neighbourhood policing guarantee we introduced to the people of GM two years ago. We are continuing to ensure we are engaging with our communities, and they know how to engage with us, so we can work together to keep preventing crime.”
Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said: “GMP has led the way in prioritising neighbourhood policing with named teams in place across our city-region. This approach has brought about real reductions in neighbourhood crime, such as burglary, and is helping to make our communities feel safer.
"This new commitment from the Government is a clear and welcome sign that GMP’s ground-breaking work is understood and valued. The extra funding for more officers will support the force to build on the strong foundations it has laid and go even further in rooting out crime and anti-social behaviour in all parts of Greater Manchester.”
