A man has been charged with murder following the death of a cyclist in Altrincham, who has now been named as Stretford Grammar School headteacher Michael Mullins.

The 56-year-old, from Weaverham in Northwich, died after being knocked off his bike in a collision on Paddock Lane at around 6:10pm on Monday 20th April. The car involved failed to stop at the scene.

Greater Manchester Police have since confirmed that Simon Richardson, born 16th May 1991 and of no fixed address, has been charged with murder, manslaughter, dangerous driving, failing to stop, and driving without insurance.

Tributes to “devoted” headteacher

Mr Mullins’ family have paid an emotional tribute, describing him as a “loving Dad, husband, Brother-in-law, ‘Diddy’, Uncle, Son in law,” and a dedicated school leader.

In a statement, they said: “Our loving Dad, husband, Brother-in-law, ‘Diddy’, Uncle, Son in law, passed away last night after being knocked off his bike.

“He was devoted to his family, and our lives will never be the same. A gap has been left in our hearts and within his role as a headteacher of Stretford Grammar school.

“Our Dad gave us fantastic memories growing up including a trip getting lost at night around Washington D.C but it was in his role as a Grandad where he truly excelled.

“Our love and memories of Michael will know no limits.

“We will love him forever, to Saturn and beyond.”

The family has asked for privacy as they come to terms with their loss.

Investigation continues

Police say Richardson has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court on Friday 24th April.

Officers are continuing to appeal for information as enquiries into the fatal collision progress. They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the घटना or who may have relevant CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage from the area at the time.

Earlier in the investigation, four people – three men and one woman – were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101 or via the LiveChat function on the Greater Manchester Police website, quoting log 2771 of 20/04/26. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
