'Some days are very, very hard': Grieving mum calls for Graduated Driving Licenses
Marcus Simmons-Allen was just 18-years-old when he was killed by a speeding driver in Altrincham in October 2021
A Greater Manchester mum is demanding urgent action from the Government to implement extra restrictions for new drivers.
'Graduated Driving Licenses' would put limit on those who've just passed their tests - such as curfews and speed limits.
Marcus Simmons-Allen was killed by a speeding driver in Altrincham in October 2021.
The 18-year-old was crossing George Richards Way when he was hit by a car. The driver was travelling at around twice the speed limit.
His mum, Paula Allen, is calling on tougher regulations for new drivers after ministers said they're considering compulsory eye sight tests for motorists aged 70 and over.
Paula Allen said grieving families are feeling dis-heartened: "Disappointed, feeling let down again, empty promises...
"Other laws are coming in, but we are united with our grief, we are united with going forward with the campaign."
The Government previously told campaigners that they are not considering introducing Graduated Driving Licenses.
Paula knows the families who travelled to London: "For those that have gone down to Parliament with Ministers to raise awareness of this, and for it to just be kicked in the long grass there, it was soul destroying for them."
"It takes so much out of you, it really does."
Paula said Marcus' legacy keeps her going: "We have a lot of other things going on in our lives, which affect us, massively.
"Some days are very, very hard. We have to navigate this journey and it is more than difficult.
"Normality is not the same anymore, and it is upsetting and you do carry that grief.
"It isn't just a bad luck story, for many of us, it's a hard cold reality, and when we are still seeing in the press, every day, young drivers, and their passengers, or both, killed behind the wheel, when it could be so, so preventable, that is the hardest thing about it."
The Government says road safety is a top priority and they have a 10 year strategy.
