Mayors to meet Salford Red Devils fans after HMCR hearing delay
Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham is set to meet with Salford Red Devils fans after a second delay in the club’s court hearing over an unpaid tax bill
Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham is set to meet with Salford Red Devils fans after a second delay in the club’s court hearing over an unpaid tax bill.
The Super League side is facing a winding-up petition from His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC), which was initially adjourned in June. A second adjournment this week has now extended the uncertainty over the club’s future.
In a joint statement, Burnham and Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said:
"We understand the frustration Salford supporters will feel with the court's decision to adjourn. It leaves the club in ongoing limbo and extends the anxiety about the club’s future that many people are experiencing across the Salford and Rugby League communities.
"In the coming days, we will meet with the 1873 Group and gather the views of all supporters. We will then communicate a common position to the HMRC and seek further meetings with Jacobsen Management Group.
"A club as proud as Salford Red Devils cannot be left on life support, living hand to mouth. A plan needs to be agreed on now that secures the club's long-term future.”
The Red Devils have endured a troubled 2025 season. Off the pitch, there have been reports of financial losses, late wage payments, and a mass player exodus.
On the pitch, the team currently sits bottom of the Super League table after a run of poor results.
Following the court ruling, the club issued a statement of its own:
“We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the courts for granting a further adjournment. This positive outcome is a vital step forward and allows Salford Red Devils to complete the remainder of our fixtures this season. It reflects the resilience of the club and the ongoing efforts taking place behind the scenes to secure its long-term future.
"We also want to acknowledge the continued support from everyone connected to the club. Your backing — whether in the stands, in the community, or beyond — remains an important part of what keeps Salford moving forward.”
Meetings between local leaders, fan groups and club stakeholders are expected to take place in the coming days, as pressure mounts for a sustainable rescue plan.
