After years of campaigning... a law in the name of one of the victims of the Manchester Arena attack's expected to come into force later today.
Martyn's Law - Named after Martyn Hett will require venues to tighten up security and have plans in place to deal with terror attacks.
Later today the law will be formally approved by the king.
The UK Government introduced the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill, widely known as Martyn's Law, to Parliament on 12 September 2024. The legislation aims to enhance the security of public events and venues by mandating preparedness measures against potential terrorist attacks.
The proposed legislation introduces a tiered approach, linking requirements to the type of activity and the number of individuals expected at a venue. Dedicated guidance and support will be provided to ensure that duty holders have the necessary information on what actions to take and how best to implement them. Additionally, a regulator will be established to support, advise, and guide those responsible for premises and events in meeting the requirements of the legislation.
The Government has acknowledged the significant contribution of Figen Murray, mother of Martyn Hett, Her campaigning has been crucial in driving this Bill forward.
