Greater Manchester Police joins Neighbourhood Policing Week of Action
Week-long campaign focuses on reducing crime and community engagement
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is participating in the Neighbourhood Policing Week of Action 2026, a national initiative aimed at proactively addressing local crime and strengthening community connections across the UK.
Throughout this dedicated week, GMP's neighbourhood teams are poised to tackle issues such as anti-social behaviour, drug dealing, and theft, while also fostering engagement through community events. This comprehensive approach highlights the integral role neighbourhood policing plays in maintaining public safety.
Positive outcomes
Over the past year, neighbourhood crime in Greater Manchester has seen a reduction by 15%, reflecting the effectiveness of community policing strategies. Notable declines have been recorded in Stockport (33%), Bury (30%), and Wigan (28%), demonstrating the success of targeted operations in these boroughs.
Under the leadership of Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson, GMP has achieved significant improvements, including 600 fewer burglary victims per month and a reduction in vehicle crime by a quarter. The force has also seen a doubling of arrests, with 72,509 arrests made in the year leading up to April 2026.
Planned activities
During Neighbourhood Policing Week, residents can expect heightened police visibility and initiatives designed to build trust and address crime's root causes. Engagement activities include Police and Community Together (PACT) meetings, school and open day visits, business interactions, and charity collaborations.
Assistant Chief Constable Matt Boyle has underscored the importance of neighbourhood policing as a core component of GMP's operations. As the force continues to invest in these roles, they are committed to preventive measures and enhancing public confidence.
This week of action exemplifies GMP’s ongoing commitment to community safety and its dedication to proactive and collaborative policing. Through fostering these connections, GMP aims to generate meaningful improvements in public safety across Greater Manchester and contribute to the wider national effort.
