A Manchester man has been sentenced to 33 years in prison for a series of sexual offences against six children in Oldham.

Leslie Smith, born 18th February 1955, was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court today (5th January 2026) after being found guilty of 17 counts of rape and 14 counts of indecent assault.

The verdict follows a trial in August 2025 that revealed Smith subjected his victims to almost daily abuse over two decades.

The court heard how, in some instances, Smith’s wife at the time, Lynda Smith, was complicit in the abuse. She was also charged with sexual offences but died in 2023 aged 61 before her case concluded.

Detective Inspector Clare Harrison, Senior Investigating Officer, praised the survivors for their courage throughout the investigation and trial.

“The strength and courage of the survivors in this case cannot be acknowledged sufficiently," Harrison said. "The scale and severity of the abuse is unimaginable, leaving a lasting impact on those who have heard the evidence.

"Despite the profound trauma inflicted by this man, the survivors have shown immense courage, determination, and resilience. Their compelling evidence and powerful testimonies in court were pivotal in ensuring that some measure of justice could be served, ensuring that he will likely serve the rest of his life in prison.

"They have made it unequivocally clear: this marks the final moment that this depraved individual will hold any power over their lives."

Harrison also expressed gratitude to the professionals involved in the case, describing their support for survivors as "instrumental" throughout the process.

She encouraged others who have experienced sexual abuse to come forward. "Please know that you are not alone and that we are here for you," Harrison said. "Our specialist officers are here to listen to you and support you."
