A major fire has erupted in Manchester city centre this evening (23rd June), sending thick plumes of smoke across the skyline and causing significant disruption to transport and nearby buildings.
The blaze broke out at the derelict Hotspur Press building on Cambridge Street, beside Oxford Road station.
Dramatic images and videos from across the region show the iconic site completely engulfed in flames, with thick smoke seen billowing over roads, rooftops and railway tracks. The fire could even be seen from planes approaching Manchester Airport.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) confirmed crews are tackling the fire and urged the public to avoid the area. A spokesperson said:
“Firefighters are currently tackling a large fire at the derelict Hotspur Press building on Cambridge Street in Manchester. An evacuation of the neighbouring apartment buildings is taking place. The public are advised to stay away from the area while crews continue to tackle the fire.”
Train services have been severely affected, with all lines at Oxford Road station blocked and the station evacuated. National Rail said disruption is expected for most of the evening. TransPennine Express confirmed:
“Due to a fire next to the track at Manchester Oxford Road, all lines are blocked and the station has been evacuated.”
Road closures are also in effect, with Oxford Street shut between Charles Street and Whitworth Street, alongside additional local diversions.
Residents in neighbouring flats have been evacuated amid concerns the fire could spread. Councillor Pat Karney, speaking from his city centre home, said council teams are on standby for further evacuations: “I can see the huge dark clouds from my flat.”
The Hotspur Press, also known as Medlock Mill, has been derelict since its closure as a printing press in 1996.
