Man charged with murder of "loving mother" in Harpurhey

The family of a woman who was sadly found dead at an address in Harpurhey yesterday (Monday 7th April) have released a heartfelt tribute.

It comes after police were called to Queens Road in the early hours of Monday morning.

Sadly, a 51-year-old woman was found dead on arrival. The victim has now been named as Clare Burns.

Following initial enquiries, officers arrested a 55-year-old man at the scene on suspicion of murder.

55-year-old Leonard Lee Stewart of Queens Road, Manchester, has today (Tuesday 8 April 2025) been charged with murder.

He remains in police custody ahead of his next appearance at Manchester City Magistrates' Court on Wednesday 9 April 2025 .

In a loving tribute, Clare’s family said:

“Clare was a loving mother, auntie, sister and daughter.

“She was funny, outgoing and a very independent person. She was also kind, generous and friendly to anyone she met.

“Clare would always light up the room she entered, and she was a brilliant friend to many.

“We will miss her dearly.”

Due to past contact between police and the victim and suspect, our Professional Standards Directorate have made a voluntarily referral to the Independent Office of Police Conduct, who are assessing the case.
