A man suspected of pointing a gun at a police officer in Salford has been arrested following a major police operation involving armed officers and a helicopter search.

The 32-year-old was detained around 10pm on Wednesday 21st May in Whalley Range.

He was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear and possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.

A firearm believed to have been used in the incident has also been recovered.

Two women, aged 56 and 33, were also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

The arrests follow a shocking incident on Monday 20th May, when officers in Higher Broughton attempted to stop a group riding e-bikes dangerously and behaving anti-socially on Great Clowes Street.

As officers moved in, one suspect allegedly pointed a firearm at an officer during a struggle, before fleeing the scene. A Taser was deployed, and a search was launched with support from the NPAS helicopter and armed response teams.

Two men, aged 20 and 21, were detained shortly after on North George Street, Salford. They remain in custody for questioning on suspicion of possessing a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

Detective Superintendent Simon Moyles from Salford district said: “This was a frightening and totally unacceptable incident that occurred in broad daylight.

“There is no place for guns on our streets and this positive action takes another firearm off the streets, a firearm that could have been used for a criminal purpose.

“We are also looking after the welfare of the officers who were involved in this incident. Our officers work tirelessly to keep our communities safe and should never be placed in such danger – not just in Salford but across Greater Manchester.”

Detectives are continuing their investigation and urge anyone with information or footage to come forward.

“If you have any information or CCTV from the area, please call us on 0161 856 4477 quoting log 1480 of 20/05/25,” DS Moyles added.

“If you would prefer to remain anonymous, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Footage and evidence can also be submitted via the GMP Evidence Portal at: https://gmp.uk.evidence.com/axon/community-request/public/AlbertParkFirearmsIncident.

Since April 2021, Greater Manchester Police have recovered more than 300 viable firearms, with nearly a third being converted blank-firers. In February 2025 alone, the force recovered 76 blank-firers and several hundred rounds of ammunition during a weapons surrender scheme – one of the highest recovery rates nationally.
