A major road connecting Manchester and Bury has been closed in both directions due to a sinkhole opening up.

Emergency crews rushed to Bury New Road in Prestwich on Tuesday (06 May), and closed off the route.

A diversion is currently in place and drivers are being warned of delays, which could last for the rest of the week.

United Utilities are among those investigating the cause of the sinkhole, the second to open on the road in seven days.

In a statement, Bury Council said: "Detailed investigation of the road has revealed a void across its full width.

"It must remain closed while United Utilities carry out further investigations.

"We are doing all we can to resolve this problem as soon as possible.

"Diversion routes are clearly signed and in place until further notice.

"If you must travel, allow extra time for your journey."
