Greater Manchester Police say the M67 is expected to remain closed for much of the day on Tuesday (04 August), due to a 'police-led incident'.
The motorway is shut in both directions between J3 at Hyde and J4 at Hattersley, where roadworks have taken place overnight.
The force has not revealed the details of the incident, with drivers warned to expect major disruption into the evening.
GMP said: ""Please be aware that officers are dealing with an ongoing incident on the M67.
"While investigations continue, the M67 will be closed in both directions for majority of the day.
"Please find an alternate route and we are sorry for the inconvenience this will cause.
"Thank you for your cooperation."
Meanwhile, National Highways confirmed a serious crash has closed the nearby Woodhead Pass, which connects Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire.
Drivers are being diverted on to the A57 and the M62.
