A major section of the M60 motorway in Greater Manchester was closed in both directions following a serious multi-vehicle collision involving four lorries and four cars near Stockport.

The incident occurred between Junction 25 for Bredbury Interchange (A560) and Junction 1 for the Pyramid Roundabout (A5145) and caused widespread disruption.

One of the heavy goods vehicles crossed through the central reservation barrier, hitting several lamp columns in the process. Another lorry involved shed its load of beer barrels across the carriageway, while ruptured fuel tanks from multiple vehicles have caused a large diesel spillage affecting both directions of the motorway.

Emergency services including Greater Manchester Police, Manchester Fire & Rescue, the North West Ambulance Service, National Highways traffic officers and maintenance contractors were all in attendance.

Despite the severity of the crash, authorities have confirmed there were only minor injuries.

A spokesperson for National Highways said:

“It is expected the road will remain closed in both directions for a substantial amount of time due to the amount of infrastructure damage, spillage, debris clean-up and the recovery of several substantially damaged large vehicles.”

Diversion routes

Clockwise (following a hollow diamond symbol, then a solid triangle symbol):

Exit at J25 and take the third exit at the roundabout onto the A560 westbound. Continue past J26 and at Portwood Interchange (J27), take the third exit to stay on the A560 (now following the solid triangle). Continue to the A5145 roundabout, take the fourth exit onto Travis Brow, and rejoin the M60 clockwise at J1.

Anti-clockwise (following solid square symbols):

Exit at J1, take the second exit onto A5145 (Travis Brow), then first exit onto the A560 eastbound at the next roundabout. Continue to the M60 J27 roundabout and take the third exit, then rejoin the M60 anti-clockwise at J25.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible, allow extra time for their journeys or consider delaying travel.
