Work to install nine new average speed cameras along Hyde Road in Manchester starts on Wednesday 4th November.

The cameras will run along a 1.2km stretch of the road, between Laburnum Road and Chapman Street.

Manchester City Council said the road is a known hotspot for road traffic crashes.

Installation will run until 16th November.

Partial lane closures will be in place around the working sites to keep workers safe, and will take place outside of peak times.

Why Hyde Road

The council said there have been 41 reported crashes along the road since January 2021.

It said these resulted in 63 casualties, 27 serious casualties and four deaths.

The work is being delivered with the Safer Roads Greater Manchester Partnership, which includes Greater Manchester Police.

The council said the aim is to improve road safety and reduce the number of serious crashes on the route.

Councillor Mandie Shilton Godwin, Executive Member for Clean Air, Environment and Transport, said: "We know that when people cut their speed, safety improves. This is why Manchester City Council are working alongside our colleagues at the Safer Roads partnership to improve safety along Hyde Road alongside other roads across Manchester."

Wider plans

The council said a further 25 routes in Manchester are being prepared for average speed camera upgrades in the near future.

The work supports Greater Manchester's Vision Zero Strategy, which aims to eliminate road deaths and life-changing injuries in the city region by 2040.

The council said it directly contributes to the Safe Speeds element of the Safe System approach.

It also supports the 2024-2027 Action Plan commitment to upgrade safety cameras and target speed enforcement at high-risk locations.
