Drivers heading into Manchester city centre are facing huge queues following a crash on a busy road.

Hyde Road in Gorton is shut in both directions between Parkdale Avenue and Chapman Street.

Sections of Hengist and Wellington Street are also closed.

Emergency services were called to reports of a collision at around 0400BST on Monday 22 April.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue confirmed two people had been taken to hospital.

In a statement, the service said: "“Just before 4am this morning (Tuesday 22nd April), three fire engines from Gorton and Philips Park fire station were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving two cars on Hyde Road, Manchester.

“Crews arrived quickly at the scene. Firefighters used spreading equipment, lighting and salvage sheets to get two men safely out of the vehicles, who were treated by colleagues from North West Ambulance Service at the scene and then taken to hospital.

“Firefighters were in attendance for around fifty minutes.”

Traffic is now backing up on the Denton Island roundabout, with congestion building on the M60, M67 and A57.
