One week on from a fire which devastated an iconic building in Manchester, a historian is warning more needs to be done to preserve historic sites in the city.

The Hotspur Press was the scene of a major fire on Monday the 23rd of June, and the damage was so severe part of it collapsed.

Campaigners had been fighting for the historic building, which is on the site of one of the city's oldest mills, to be saved.

However, earlier this year the government rejected a bid to have some of it Grade II-listed.

The building will now be partially demolished and an investigation into the fire is on-going.

Jonathan Schofield has been a registered Blue Badge Guide since 1996 and offers a wide variety of tours in Manchester. He has this warning: "It's a lesson to us.

"We have to be wary that we don't loose anymore of these because we don't want to loose that special of the old with the new.

"Because then we can have some, if you've got the imagination to play with it, some connection back to those people who created the city in the first place."

Jonathan said the contrast of the city is something that needs to be saved: "You might get something built last year next to something that's 200 years old, and that really gives the quality to the urban grain to the city... If you've got the eye to see it.

"So we don't really want to loose any old buildings, because there are others at danger."
