Family and friends of Mani, bassist for the Stone Roses and Primal Scream, are gathering at Manchester Cathedral this morning to pay their respects.

The musician, a key figure in shaping Greater Manchester's music scene in the late 80s and 90s, passed away last month at the age of 63 due to respiratory issues.

The Stone Roses were influential in the British alternative rock scene, and Mani's contributions to the band's sound have left a notable legacy in Manchester and beyond.

This morning’s memorial marks a moment for the city to reflect on the impact of one of its iconic artists.

Luke Harrison is the subject group head for Music at the University of Salford: "I think it's a real shame when people go, because, you know that they're not going to put anything out again, but equally, because they've got these music records, they don't die.

"It's a cliché but he will live on through this music."

"He wasn't just a one trick pony, he could do other things.

"He was core to Manchester, he never really left, he based himself here.

"He was occasionally seen about town, I remember when in my university days you'd see him, he DJ'd at a lot of the venues.

"I think people recognise him, not just as a musician, but as someone who represents Manchester in that era of Mad-chester."
