A 17-year-old boy is being treated in hospital after suffering a serious head injury during a fight that broke out following a rugby match in Warrington.

The disorder happened shortly after the game between Warrington Wolves and Widnes Vikings at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Friday 9th January.

Police were called at around 9.23pm after reports of a large fight on Dallam Lane, close to the stadium.

Three teenagers – two aged 16 and one aged 17, all from Widnes – were arrested on suspicion of assault.

They have since been released on bail as enquiries continue.

Appeal for witnesses

Detectives investigating what happened are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Chief Inspector Robert McLoughlin, of Warrington Local Policing Unit, said: “I understand that this incident has caused considerable concern for members of the local community and has tragically left a 17-year-old boy needing treatment for a serious head injury.

“Rugby League is a big part of the Warrington and Widnes culture, and the vast majority of fans attend to support their team and their community.

“However, in this instance, a select few chose to engage in behaviour which is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated, and I hope these arrests reassure residents that we are doing all we can to hold those involved accountable.

“I’d continue to urge anyone with any information which may assist detectives with their investigation, to please get in touch.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101, quoting IML 2248844. Details can also be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
