Woman who fled to Tenerife to avoid jail returned to UK
A woman who fled to Spain after defrauding an elderly woman out of almost £300,000 has been arrested at Manchester Airport after being extradited back to the UK.
Pamela Gwinnett was detained by Greater Manchester Police officers on Thursday 30th July after arriving back in Britain to begin serving a six-year prison sentence imposed in her absence.
Gwinnett is due to appear before Manchester Magistrates' Court on Friday 31st July in relation to previously failing to appear at court.
Fraud conviction
Greater Manchester Police said Gwinnett fled to Tenerife in 2025 in an attempt to evade justice following an investigation into the fraud.
She was convicted and sentenced in her absence in October 2025 for fraud by abuse of position and theft after being found guilty of defrauding an elderly woman out of almost £300,000.
A subsequent Proceeds of Crime hearing also resulted in an order for £300,000 being granted.
Police said they worked alongside the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Spanish authorities to locate Gwinnett and secure her extradition to the UK.
'A tenacious investigation'
PC Georgia Loughton, the officer in charge of the investigation, said: “This result is the culmination of a tenacious investigation ensuring that we secured justice for the family of the victim at the centre of this case.
“Work to convict Gwinnett and her evading justice has been ongoing for quite some time. We were relentless in our commitment to bring her back to the UK, where she will now serve her term in prison.
“I would like to thank the NCA and Spanish Police for their work with us on this case.
“Unfortunately, the victim in this case sadly passed away in 2022. Gwinnett’s actions have denied the victim’s family closure – we hope some from of closure comes from this result.”
'No place to hide'
Clare Meehan, from the NCA's National Extradition Unit, said: “Pamela Gwinnett abused her position as a caregiver to commit serious fraud offences against a vulnerable woman.
“Since she fled the UK, the NCA has worked closely with Greater Manchester Police and our law enforcement partners in Spain to secure her return to face justice.
“We continue to operate around the world to ensure there is no place to hide for fugitives from UK justice.”
