Firefighters tackle industrial blaze causing evacuations in Saddleworth
Several homes evacuated as fire crews work to control the blaze
A significant fire has engulfed an industrial building on Chew Valley Road in Greenfield, Saddleworth, prompting the evacuation of around 45 homes.
The fire, which began early Sunday morning, has led to the closure of a nearby Tesco store as its car park is being utilised as a base for fire operations.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) reported receiving calls about the fire shortly after 7.45 am on 16th August.
Emergency response includes 10 fire engines and various specialist appliances from across the Greater Manchester region.
Firefighters are working vigorously to manage the situation.
Due to the smoke generated by the blaze, residents are advised to keep windows and doors shut, and a cordon is set up to secure the area.
A spokesperson for GMFRS emphasised the need for people to avoid the vicinity if possible.
The Saddleworth fire coincides with firefighter warnings about the extreme demand faced recently, with 43 new wildfires igniting since Friday.
