Firefighters remained at the scene of a synagogue blaze in Salford overnight.

Worshippers were arriving for Friday night prayers when crews were first called to Northumberland Street at around 5pm on Friday 31 January.

Six fire engines were used to tackle the blaze.

The road was closed in both directions for a number of hours to allow crews to extinguish the fire.

An investigation into what caused the blaze is ongoing.

Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service initially released a statement, saying: "Firefighters are in attendance at a fire involving a synagogue on Northumberland Street in Salford.

"Crews are working with partner agencies to bring the fire under control and keep residents safe.

"The road currently remains closed."

In an update later in the evening, officials said: "Crews have extinguished the fire on Northumberland Street but will remain on the scene overnight.

"Please continue to avoid the area."
