Hundreds of football fans have turned out to pay their respects to former Rochdale player Joe Thompson, at his funeral in Worsley.

The 36-year-old died on 17 April 2025 after being diagnosed with cancer for a third time 12 months earlier.

Thompson had previously battled Hodgkin lymphoma, and had recovered twice to resume his career on the pitch.

He worked as a pundit after retiring from football, and gave motivational talks.

A message recorded by Thompson before his death played out to the hundreds of fans watching on screens outside.

"Unfortunately, to ascend as a legend, you have to leave sooner than most would like", he said.

"Today is not a day of loss, it's a day to celebrate life, to give glory to God, and ultimately, to remind ourselves of the incredible moments we have shared."

Thompson's widow Chantelle said her late husband was her "rock" and "soulmate", while his brother Reuben praised an "amazing turnout".

As well as three stints at Rochdale, Thompson also spent time with Tranmere Rovers, Bury, Wrexham, Southport and Carlisle United.

He also trained with Manchester United in his youth.

Paying tribute to him, Rochdale A.F.C. said: "We first knew Joe primarily as a talented footballer, but we would soon grow to adore his loving, infectious personality.

"He faced every battle head-on, both on and off the pitch. His journey and indomitable spirit have been an inspiration for everyone who has been touched by his story."
