Extra stop and search powers in Rochdale town centre following reported stabbing
Extra police patrols planned across the Bank Holiday weekend
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has authorised additional stop and search powers in Rochdale town centre following reports of young people carrying weapons and a stabbing involving a 13-year-old boy.
The Section 60 and Section 60AA authorities came into effect at 3pm on Sunday, 30 August 2026, and will remain in place until 3pm on Monday, 31 August 2026.
The powers cover the area outlined by GMP around Rochdale town centre.
Under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, officers have enhanced powers to stop and search people within the designated area. The Section 60AA authority also gives officers powers to require the removal of face coverings in certain circumstances.
GMP said the decision followed reports of youths carrying weapons in the area, as well as a serious assault reported near the Riverside Shopping Centre.
The incident, which took place on Saturday, 29 August, involved a 13-year-old boy who was stabbed. He remains in hospital receiving treatment.
Two teenage boys have been arrested on suspicion of assault and possession of a bladed article. They remain in custody while police continue their enquiries, including efforts to identify others who may have been involved.
GMP said both the Section 60 and Section 60AA powers will apply within the designated area.
Police officers will also maintain a heightened presence in Rochdale town centre throughout the Bank Holiday weekend, with additional patrols intended to provide reassurance to residents and visitors.
GMP is urging members of the public to remain vigilant and report any concerns or information that could assist the ongoing investigation.
Chief Inspector Michael Barton, Neighbourhoods lead for GMP’s Rochdale district, said: “We want to assure the people of Rochdale that we are fully committed to locating the offenders involved in the disturbing events that unfolded in our town centre last night.
“Our dedicated team of detectives, led by senior investigating officers, is working tirelessly to piece together the full story of the serious assault and the wider disorder that occurred.
“Already, two individuals have been arrested and are currently in custody for questioning. While our investigation is still in its early stages, we are exploring every possible lead to ensure that everyone involved is identified and held accountable.
“Our detectives are diligently reviewing CCTV footage, gathering witness statements, and analysing all available intelligence. We are determined to bring those responsible to justice and restore peace to our community.
“We understand the fear and concern this shocking act of violence has caused among residents across our community. Please know that we are deploying significant resources to this investigation, and we are leaving no stone unturned in our pursuit of justice.
“Violence, especially involving weapons, has no place in our community. We are resolute in our efforts to take decisive action against those who threaten our safety and well-being. We will ensure Rochdale is a hostile place for anyone involved in disorder or carrying a weapon.”
