Exclusion zone in place after major fire at Wigan pub
Crews remain at the scene after early morning blaze
A 50-metre exclusion zone has been set up in Wigan town centre after a fire broke out at the John Bull Chop House in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said four fire engines from Wigan, Atherton and Leigh fire stations were called to the pub on Coopers Row at approximately 4am on 4th August. The fire has since been extinguished, with no casualties reported.
A spokesperson for GMFRS said: “At approximately 4am on Tuesday 4 August, four fire engines from Wigan, Atherton and Leigh fire stations were called to attend a fire at a pub on Coopers Row, Wigan.
“Crews arrived quickly and used breathing apparatus, three hose reels, one hose reel jet and other specialist equipment to extinguish the fire.
“Firefighters remain in attendance at this time.”
Public advised to avoid the area
Wigan Council said a 50-metre exclusion zone had been put in place while emergency services dealt with the incident.
A council spokesperson said: “GMFRS are currently tackling a blaze at the John Bull pub in Wigan. A 50-metre exclusion zone has been set up to keep the public safe. Please avoid the area if possible.”
The council later confirmed the fire had been extinguished, posting: “8.40am update: The fire has now been extinguished. The cordon will be lifted shortly. Thanks to @manchesterfire.”
No casualties reported
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed there were no casualties as a result of the fire.
The service said crews remained at the scene alongside Greater Manchester Police and Wigan Council following the incident.
