Manchester City have appointed Enzo Maresca as the club's new manager, with the Italian taking over from Pep Guardiola after his departure at the end of last season.

Maresca has signed a 3 year deal at the Etihad Stadium and takes charge after City reached an agreement with Chelsea over compensation for the 45-year-old.

The appointment brings Maresca back to the club where he previously worked under Guardiola as part of City's coaching staff - before departing to take the Leicester City job.

He guided Leicester to promotion from the Championship before moving to Chelsea, where he spent 18 months in charge.

City reach agreement with Chelsea

Manchester City's pursuit of Maresca centred on negotiations with Chelsea, who were entitled to compensation because Maresca resigned from his position at Chelsea, despite being under contract until June 2029.

As such, Chelsea were entitled to compensation if he agreed to join another club during that time period.

Talks between the two clubs took place over the size and structure of the compensation package before an agreement was reached - reportedly for around £17.26 million - clearing the way for Maresca's return to the Etihad.

Familiar face returns to Manchester

Maresca's previous spell at Manchester City saw him play a key role within Guardiola's backroom staff, helping the club win major domestic and European honours.

His coaching philosophy has been heavily influenced by Guardiola's possession-based style, while his subsequent managerial roles at Leicester City and Chelsea have seen him establish himself as one of Europe's leading coaches.

He now returns to Manchester City as the club's new manager, tasked with building on one of the most successful eras in the club's history.
