It's as people travel around the country for their festive celebrations

People across Greater Manchester are being urged to check their cars are road ready - as they hit the road for their festive celebrations.

Research for Kwik Fit found that last Christmas, only half (52%) of drivers covering over 200 miles during the festive period checked their tyre pressures and less than a third (29%) checked their tyre tread.

If those patterns are repeated this year, some 3.9 million drivers will be setting off for lengthy trips without ensuring their tyres are correctly inflated.

Kwik Fit warns that this is especially important when travelling in a car fully laden with passengers - and presents - as the recommended tyre pressures are likely to be higher than for everyday use.

In addition to neglecting tyre checks, only just over two in five (43%) drivers ensured they had enough screen wash, with even fewer checking their oil level (37%) or coolant (22%). In fact, one in six (16%) who covered more than 200 miles by car over the festive season didn't make any checks at all.

National Highways North West has this advice for people travelling over the Christmas period to make sure their cars are safe: "As you embark on long or significant journeys this winter, make T.R.I.P safety checks your steadfast companion.

"By checking your vehicle, staying weather-aware, and prioritising driver well-being, you contribute to a safer and more enjoyable travel experience for you, your passengers and everyone using the road."

Here is a round up of their top tips:

Before setting off:

  • check road conditions and identify potential disruptions
  • have alternative travel routes in mind to reduce stress if weather worsens
  • check the weather forecast before travelling
  • if heavy downpours, strong winds, snow or ice are expected, consider delaying your journey until it clears
