More affordable housing is set to be built across Manchester, after the council confirmed where new properties will be built.

Town hall bosses say building new affordable homes is ‘one of the council’s biggest priorities’, setting an ‘ambitious target’ of constructing 10,000 properties in the decade up to 2032. Construction has started on council housing projects in Monsall, Longsight, and Ancoats.

Now, some 700 new affordable homes are set to be built as chiefs are set to approve ‘disposing’ ten parcels of council-owned brownfield for redevelopment.

Council leader Bev Craig said: “We know that building these much-needed homes isn’t easy, so we have looked at how we can get the best use from land that the council owns to help us reach ambitious housing strategy.

“We are on track to meet our target, and we have seen more genuinely affordable homes built in the last year than at any other time in more than a decade. This is being done through programmes like this, our own building company This City, Project 500, large regeneration schemes and working to influence the market. We are committed to building the new homes Manchester residents need to thrive.”

The full list of new affordable housing locations includes:

  • 76 homes for social rent on the Grey Mare Lane estate in Beswick, as part of a wider plan to build 500 new houses.
  • Building 31 social rent homes with housing association Jigsaw on the derelict Apollo pub in Miles Platting, complementing the PFI programme that has delivered 480 new family homes in the last decade.
  • Constructing 12 bespoke supported accommodation homes in Clayton with housing association Mosscare St Vincents (MSV), specialised for adults with learning difficulties and autism.
  • MSV is also hoping to build 220 affordable homes on Barnhill Street in Moss Side.
  • There is also hopes 50 more affordable homes could be built on Alexandra Road, where Moss Side Children’s Centre used to be.
  • 50 ‘larger affordable family homes’ to build on unused Levenshulme Cricket Club land.
  • That project could happen alongside another 30 new affordable homes on Levenshulme Baths.
  • There will be 70 affordable properties at The Peacock Centre in Gorton, built by Clarion.
  • Housing association Southway is proposing nine new affordable homes on Wilbraham Road in Chorlton.
  • It’s believed 150 new homes could come to Broadmoss in Charlestown, near the M60.

The council’s executive will discuss the plans at 2pm on Wednesday, January 22.
