Greater Manchester Police have referred themselves to the IOPC after a 19-year-old was hit by a car
A 19-year-old man has died after being hit by a car following a police pursuit near the M60 and M66 interchange in Greater Manchester.
Greater Manchester Police say the man was struck by a vehicle travelling southbound on the M66 at Simister Island at around 9.40pm on Sunday 16th November.
He is believed to have been a passenger in a blue BMW X3, which officers say was spotted driving at speed and going through a red light on Bury Old Road.
A pursuit was authorised, but police lost sight of the car.
The BMW was later found abandoned at Junction 18 of the M60, after colliding with another vehicle.
According to GMP, the passengers ran from the car along the motorway, where one of them was hit by a Tesla.
He died at the scene.
No arrests have been made.
A referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as well as GMP’s Professional Standards Directorate, which is standard procedure in such cases.
Detective Constable Ian Lawton from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Officers initiated a pursuit in accordance with policy after a vehicle failed to stop for police after being seen driving at speed.
“The subsequent collision and tragic fatal injuries are now part of an independent review with the IOPC.
“We extend our condolences to the family and are appealing for anyone with information to please come forward and report.”
