Tributes are continuing to pour in this morning for a London firefighter who was killed in action at a blaze in Bicester on Thursday night.

A second firefighter and a member of the public also died at the scene.

Two further firefighters remain in hospital with serious injuries.

Police confirmed on Friday night that 38 year-old Martyn Sadler, who worked for fire services in both Oxfordshire and London, died alongside fellow firefighter 30 year-old Jennie Logan, and local businessman David Chester, who was 57.

The head of the London Fire Brigade says Martyn "exemplified courage and selflessness".

London Fire Commissioner, Andy Roe said: “I can now confirm the London firefighter who died in the line of duty while attending a major incident in Bicester last night was leading firefighter/sub officer Martyn Sadler, of Ealing Blue Watch. Martyn, who was serving on retained duty at Bicester Fire Station, sadly lost his life alongside a colleague from Oxfordshire Fire & Rescue Service and a member of the public.

“We are devastated by the loss of our colleague and friend.

“This is clearly an incredibly difficult time for us all; we have lost a well-respected and much-loved colleague who exemplified courage and selflessness in the service of others.

“Our thoughts are with all the families, friends, and colleagues impacted by this tragedy. We are doing everything we can to provide support to Martyn’s family and colleagues.

“It has been an incredibly challenging day for the UK Fire and Rescue Service. This incident highlights the high-risk nature of the service we provide every day.

“I ask that everyone respects the family’s privacy and gives them the space to grieve.”

An investigation into the fire is ongoing.
